AI illustration

Azerai La Residence Hue, a 122-room 1930 Art Deco mansion at 5 Le Loi facing the Citadel, is the top pick among the best hotels in Hue for most visitors. It sits on the south bank of the Perfume River, with a saltwater pool and an easy walk to restaurants. On a budget, stay in the tourist quarter near Pham Ngu Lao Street, where Hue hotels are cheapest. For history, pick a homestay inside the Citadel walls. For quiet near the royal tombs, choose a garden resort on the outskirts.

Area Best for Example Distance to sights
South bank tourist quarter First trip, budget, nightlife Hue Nino Hotel 25 to 30 min walk to Imperial City

Where to stay in Hue: areas at a glance

Food, bars and the walking street

Best for first-timers, budget trips and short stays

South bank tourist quarter

The grid of streets around Pham Ngu Lao, Chu Van An and Nguyen Tri Phuong, where most visitors stay.

The tourist quarter on the south bank is where most visitors to Hue stay, and it is the easiest base for a first trip. Pham Ngu Lao, Chu Van An and Vo Thi Sau form the night walking street, with bars, street food and travel agents, and the hotels on Nguyen Tri Phuong, Nguyen Cong Tru and the side lanes are a few minutes away on foot. The Perfume River is a short walk north. The Imperial City is on the far bank, about 25 to 30 minutes on foot over Truong Tien Bridge, or a short Grab ride. The trade-off is noise. The walking street runs late on Friday and Saturday nights, so light sleepers should pick a hotel one or two streets back. Skip this area if you want quiet evenings or a garden setting.

The classic Perfume River hotels

Best for couples, river views and a pool

Le Loi riverside

The big riverfront hotels on Le Loi Street and nearby Hung Vuong, between the train station and Truong Tien Bridge.

Le Loi Street runs along the south bank of the Perfume River, and it holds Hue's classic hotels. You get river views, a riverside park for evening walks, and most of the city's larger pools and spas. The tourist quarter is a few minutes away on foot, and the Citadel faces you across the water, about 25 to 30 minutes on foot over the bridge or a short taxi ride. Hung Vuong, the main road heading south from Truong Tien Bridge, has more large hotels a little further from the river. This area suits couples and families who want a full-service hotel with a walkable location. The downside is price, since this is where the city's luxury rooms sit. Hotels on Hung Vuong also face a busy road, so ask for a high or rear room.

Inside the old walls

Best for history lovers and early starts

North bank near the Citadel

The quiet streets inside and around the Citadel walls, a short walk from the Imperial City.

The north bank holds the Citadel, a walled area of lakes, lanes and local markets that surrounds the Imperial City. Staying here means you can walk to the gates before the tour groups arrive, and you see a quieter, more residential side of Hue. Accommodation is mainly small homestays and family-run hostels rather than hotels, and we found few larger hotels we could verify inside the walls. Dong Ba Market is close to the river on this side. The trade-off is that bars and most restaurants for visitors are on the south bank, so evenings mean a bridge crossing on foot or by Grab. Choose the north bank for a culture-focused stay of two or three nights. Avoid it if you want a pool or nightlife.

Gardens, villages and the royal tombs

Best for slow stays, couples and tomb visits

Vy Da and the outskirts

Quieter riverside lanes east of the centre, plus garden resorts in Kim Long, Thuy Bieu and Thuy Xuan.

If you want Hue at a slower pace, look beyond the centre. Vy Da, east of the tourist quarter along the Nhu Y River, is residential and calmer, with riverside lanes and fewer travellers. Further out, the outskirts hold Hue's garden stays. Kim Long, upriver on the north bank near Thien Mu Pagoda, has traditional garden houses. Thuy Bieu and Thuy Xuan, to the south-west, put you near the royal tombs of Minh Mang, Tu Duc and Khai Dinh. Hotels here are set in green grounds with pools, and several run shuttles into town. This suits couples, longer stays and anyone visiting the tombs. The trade-off is distance: from Kim Long it is about 30 minutes on foot to the Citadel, and from the tomb area you will rely on taxis or a hotel shuttle.

Sea views outside the city

Best for a beach stay before or after Hue

Thuan An and Lang Co beaches

Thuan An beach east of the city, and the Lang Co bay resort strip on the road to Da Nang.

Hue is not a beach city, but two stretches of coast are within reach. Thuan An is about 15 km east of the centre, roughly 20 minutes by car, and it is a local beach with seafood stalls and little nightlife. Lang Co, on the road south towards the Hai Van Pass and Da Nang, is a bay backed by mountains, home to the Laguna Lang Co resort complex. Guides put the drive from central Hue at roughly 1 to 1.5 hours, and Da Nang airport is about an hour away. Lang Co suits a resort stay at the start or end of a central Vietnam trip. It is not a base for sightseeing in Hue, because each day trip into the city means a long drive.

Best hotels in Hue: south bank tourist quarter

Budget: Hue Nino Hotel

A small hotel at 13/2 Lane 14 Nguyen Cong Tru, on a lane a few minutes’ walk from the night walking street. Why this one: it is a simple, central budget base, and guides note city views from some rooms and an airport shuttle. The lane address is hard to find, so send the driver the hotel’s map pin.

Budget: Vietnam Backpacker Hostels – Hue

A hostel at 10 Pham Ngu Lao, in the middle of the walking street, close to Truong Tien Bridge. Why this one: it is the social option, with dorms and private doubles, a bar and restaurant downstairs, and a 24-hour front desk. Expect noise late at night. Choose it if you want company rather than sleep.

Mid-range: Senna Hue Hotel

A modern hotel at 7 Nguyen Tri Phuong, a short walk from the walking street and Truong Tien Bridge. Why this one: it has an outdoor pool, a separate children’s pool and a spa, which few mid-range hotels in the centre can match. Guest scores on booking sites are high. Breakfast is sold separately on some rates.

Mid-range: Moonlight Hotel Hue

A 90-room hotel at 20 Pham Ngu Lao, about two minutes’ walk from the walking street. Why this one: it gives you an indoor pool, a spa and a sauna in the busiest part of town, and some rooms face the river. Parking is limited, so tell the hotel if you arrive by car.

Le Loi riverside

Le Loi Street runs along the south bank of the Perfume River, and it holds Hue’s classic hotels. You get river views, a riverside park for evening walks, and most of the city’s larger pools and spas. The tourist quarter is a few minutes away on foot, and the Citadel faces you across the water, about 25 to 30 minutes on foot over the bridge or a short taxi ride.

Le Loi riverside in Hue, Vietnam: AI illustration of the area

Hung Vuong, the main road heading south from Truong Tien Bridge, has more large hotels a little further from the river. Melia Vinpearl Hue, a tall hotel at 50A Hung Vuong with river views from its upper floors, is another option here. This area suits couples and families who want a full-service hotel with a walkable location. The downside is price, since this is where the city’s luxury rooms sit. Hotels on Hung Vuong also face a busy road, so ask for a high or rear room.

Mid-range: Hotel Saigon Morin

A historic hotel at 30 Le Loi, next to Truong Tien Bridge, first opened in 1901. Why this one: you get a central riverside address, an outdoor pool and a spa, in a building that has hosted guests for more than a century. It is the easiest walk to both the bridge and the walking street.

Luxury: Azerai La Residence Hue

A 122-room hotel at 5 Le Loi, in a 1930 Art Deco mansion that was once the French governor’s residence. Why this one: it faces the Citadel across the river, has a saltwater pool and a spa, and Travel + Leisure ranked it in its 2026 Asia-Pacific luxury awards. Ask for a river-view room.

Luxury: Silk Path Grand Hue Hotel

A large hotel at 02 Le Loi, near the train station end of the riverfront. Why this one: it has an outdoor pool, a spa and a kids’ club, so it is the strongest pick here for families. It is a slightly longer walk to the bars than the hotels near the bridge.

Luxury: Indochine Palace

A 222-room hotel at 105A Hung Vuong, about 15 minutes on foot from the night walking street. Why this one: it has a pool with a poolside bar, a spa and several restaurants, and booking sites often show lower starting rates than the riverfront luxury hotels. You trade river views for more space.

North bank near the Citadel

The north bank holds the Citadel, a walled area of lakes, lanes and local markets that surrounds the Imperial City. Staying here means you can walk to the gates before the tour groups arrive, and you see a quieter, more residential side of Hue. Dong Ba Market is close to the river on this side.

Accommodation is mainly small homestays and family-run hostels rather than hotels, and we found few larger hotels we could verify inside the walls. The trade-off is that bars and most restaurants for visitors are on the south bank, so evenings mean a bridge crossing on foot or by Grab. Choose the north bank for a culture-focused stay of two or three nights. Avoid it if you want a pool or nightlife.

Budget: A-Maze House

A family-run hostel at No 2, Alley 122 Le Thanh Ton, inside the Citadel near Tinh Tam Lake, about 670 m from the Imperial City. Why this one: it has dorms, singles, doubles and an attic room, and it scores 9.7 from more than 450 reviews on Hostelworld, with stays logged into October 2026. It is a quiet base for an early start at the palace.

Vy Da and the outskirts

If you want Hue at a slower pace, look beyond the centre. Vy Da, east of the tourist quarter along the Nhu Y River, is residential and calmer, with riverside lanes and fewer travellers. Further out, the outskirts hold Hue’s garden stays.

Mid-range: Hue Riverside Villa

A nine-room guesthouse at 16/7 Nguyen Cong Tru, at the end of a lane on the Nhu Y River, between the tourist quarter and Vy Da. Why this one: you get an outdoor pool, a garden terrace and a river setting, yet the walking street is about five minutes away on foot. It is small and books up early.

Mid-range: Hue Riverside Boutique Resort & Spa

A resort at 588 Bui Thi Xuan in Thuy Bieu, upriver on the south bank, west of the centre. Why this one: it is a riverside stay in a village setting with a spa, and the city’s tourism portal lists it as an eco resort. Plan on a taxi into town for dinner.

Luxury: Pilgrimage Village Boutique Resort & Spa

A resort of bungalows, villas and houses at 130 Minh Mang in Thuy Xuan, about 15 minutes by car from the centre. Why this one: it is set in gardens and green forest, with pools and a spa, close to the tombs of Tu Duc, Khai Dinh and Minh Mang, and it runs a free shuttle into Hue.

Luxury: Ancient Hue Garden Houses

A small hotel of about 21 rooms at 47 Kiet 104 Kim Long, near Thien Mu Pagoda. Why this one: the rooms sit in royal-style garden houses and French villas, with two outdoor pools and a spa, so it feels like a private estate. Guests note it can feel far from town for a one or two night stay.

Thuan An and Lang Co beaches

Hue is not a beach city, but two stretches of coast are within reach. Thuan An is about 15 km east of the centre, roughly 20 minutes by car, and it is a local beach with seafood stalls and little nightlife. We could not confirm a Thuan An resort as operating in 2026, so we have not listed one.

For more coast options, see our best resorts in Da Nang and Hoi An beach resorts guides.

Luxury: Banyan Tree Lang Co

An all-villa resort in Cu Du village, part of Laguna Lang Co. Why this one: every villa has its own pool, the resort sits on the bay with mountains behind, and the complex has a Nick Faldo designed golf course. It is a destination stay, not a Hue base.

Luxury: Angsana Lang Co

A 220-room resort in the same Laguna Lang Co complex, next to Banyan Tree Lang Co. Why this one: it is the larger resort on the bay, with a long pool, rooms with balconies and access to the shared golf course. It usually costs less than its villa neighbour.

Plan your stay in Hue

Airport transfer. Phu Bai International Airport (HUI) is about 15 km south of the centre, and the drive takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes. A Vietnam Airlines guide from 2025 puts Grab and similar apps from about 160,000 VND a trip, while another guide quotes metered taxis at about 270,000 to 300,000 VND. Public bus lines run from the airport junction for a few thousand dong, but they are slow with luggage. Check the app before you travel. Many hotels, including Pilgrimage Village and Hue Riverside Villa, offer paid or free transfers.

Arriving by train or road. Hue Railway Station is on the south bank, at the end of Le Loi Street, so the riverside hotels are a short taxi ride away. The train from Da Nang takes about 2.5 to 3 hours along the coast. Our Hoi An to Hue guide compares the train, bus and Hai Van Pass car options, and our Vietnam train travel guide covers booking.

Addresses. Thua Thien Hue province became Hue, a centrally governed city, on 1 January 2025. On 1 July 2025 the city’s wards were merged again, so the old centre now sits mainly in Thuan Hoa ward (south bank) and Phu Xuan ward (north bank, around the Citadel). Booking sites and maps may still show “Thua Thien Hue” or the old ward names, such as Phu Hoi or Vinh Ninh.

When prices peak. Spring, from about February to April, has the most reliable weather and is a busy time, and prices rise during Tet and the Hue Festival. The 2026 festival ran across the whole year, with its main arts week on 13 to 18 June. October and November are the wettest months, and low areas near the river can flood. See our Vietnam weather by month guide before you pick dates.

Getting around. The south bank centre is walkable. Grab cars and motorbikes are the easiest way to reach the Citadel at night and the tombs, which are spread out along the river. Many hotels rent bicycles.

Imperial City ticket. Several 2026 guides list the adult ticket at 200,000 VND, with combo tickets that add the royal tombs. Booths may take cash only, so carry small notes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best hotels in Hue for most visitors?

The best hotel in Hue for most visitors is Azerai La Residence Hue, a riverside mansion at 5 Le Loi facing the Citadel. It has a saltwater pool and a spa, and the centre is a short walk away. For a lower budget, Hotel Saigon Morin on the same street is a central riverside alternative.

Where is the best area to stay in Hue?

The best area to stay in Hue for a first visit is the south bank, between the Le Loi riverfront and the night walking street. It has the widest choice of hotels, food and bars, and the Imperial City is a short Grab ride across the river. Stay inside the Citadel only if history comes first.

Are there good budget hotels in Hue?

Good budget hotels in Hue are easy to find in the south bank tourist quarter. Hue Nino Hotel is a simple central base, and Vietnam Backpacker Hostels – Hue suits travellers who want a social hostel. Inside the Citadel, A-Maze House is a well-reviewed family-run hostel.

Is it better to stay in Hue city or at the beach?

Staying in Hue city is better for sightseeing, because the Imperial City, the river and the tombs are all close. A beach resort at Lang Co is better as a separate stop, since it is roughly 1 to 1.5 hours from central Hue by car. Many visitors spend two nights in the city and add the beach on the way to Da Nang.

Which Hue hotels have a pool?

Hue hotels with a pool include Azerai La Residence Hue, Hotel Saigon Morin, Silk Path Grand Hue Hotel and Indochine Palace on the riverside, and Senna Hue Hotel and Moonlight Hotel Hue in the tourist quarter. On the outskirts, Pilgrimage Village and Ancient Hue Garden Houses also have pools. Check pool hours with the hotel, as some close in the evening.
